One of my favorite genres... murder mystery/thriller , one of my favorite authors of all times Agatha Christie ,One of my favorite books I can say for sure And then there were none ....believe me once you start it there is no going back, you will be restless until you finish the book and until you finally get answers to all your Whys??
The book starts off with a nursery rhyme
"Ten little soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were Nine.
Nine little soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were Eight.
Eight little soldier boys traveling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were Seven.
Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six.
Six little soldier boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were Five.
Five little soldier boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were Four.
Four little soldier boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three.
Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were Two.
Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun;
One got frizzled up and then there was One.
One little soldier boy left all alone;
He went and hanged himself and then there were None."
Strange isn't it?
10 diverse characters, leaving behind 10 unapologetic pasts are lured into an isolated island namely SOLDIER ISLAND, at the coast of Devon by a mysterious U.N.O (yeah... it's not what you are thinking) it's Mr. U.N.Owen
8 guests...none of them have a clear insight about the host, are welcomed at the mansion by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers who would serve as a house help to the guests which included people from varied fields, different age groups, and different occupations, and varied pasts!!!!
All of them were allotted spacious and well-facilitated rooms...Mr. and Mrs. Rogers did their work with utmost sincerity...all the guests freshened up and gathered in the dining room for breakfast...
All of a sudden, they heard a voice...dictating to them their sins, aloud...
And as they say"Be sure thy sins will find thee out"
Everyone was stuck for a moment and then started to investigate where the voice came from...it was a gramophone's record...
They started discussing over it...
Anthony Marston occupied the corner of the hallway and made himself a drink...possibly choked himself and died!!!! (return to the first line of the rhyme)
One after the other people were dying of nowhere... it wasn't an accident someone was killing them on purpose...someone amongst them!!!
But who could it be.......
Mr.Justice Wargrave who had lately retired from the bench, one who knew the a-z of law he could easily murder anyone but was he the murderer...that's the question??
Vera Claythorne, a governess at the nursery school and also worked as a secretory with an agency, soft-hearted, one who would start crying over a broken nail could she do it??
Philip Lombard, a secretive CID agent who was asked to land on the island to inspect one of his clients by Mr.Issac Morris...had he known about the pasts of these people...and that's why he murdered everyone??
Miss Emily Brent, daughter of army personnel which clearly explained her upright and righteous nature was harsh and probably twitchy. She made a wonderful suspect as the murderer. But was it her?
Dr.Armstrong, considered to be one of the best in his field of work could easily get away with it due to his position and power...did he poison them??
A series of questions arise after every twist in the plot ....some answerable and most non-answerable.You will return to the first page of the book every now and then...where the poem/nursery rhyme is written.
Agatha Christie knows how to make you feel like you’ve figured everything out way ahead of time. You start to connect the dots and feel like a genius for solving a murder mystery, then she comes out of nowhere and completely blows your mind and makes you question everything you thought of the plot, and the murderer.
